One of the first big games for iOS -- and the only title of its genre to come from Apple -- has been quietly pulled from the App Store. MacRumors is reporting that the classic Texas Hold'em game is no longer available for purchase.

The game was first introduced in late 2006 for iPods. After the iPhone debuted in mid-2007, Apple was rumored to be starting in-house game development based on the successful release of Texas Hold'em. When the App Store launched in 2008, one of the first titles available was -- you got it -- Texas Hold'em. It was thought that the game was developed more as a proof of concept to demonstrate the capabilities of the iPhone platform for gaming to potential game developers. Once the big development houses like EA and Gameloft started creating titles, Apple realized they didn't need to roll their own.

The app sold for US$4.99 and hadn't seen many updates, the last being in September of 2008. There's still a page on the Apple site about the title, although it may not last for long. As a person who spent many an hour playing Texas Hold'em in the garage with the old Macs and Apple posters on the wall, I'm going to miss this classic.

There aren't many remakes of classic arcade and console titles you can point to and say anything other than, "Why would you even make this?" I'm not talking about the versions that are literally the exact game you already remember, except slathered in HD visuals or with an online mode stitched to its ancient framework. I'm speaking instead of the games that bear the name of something you remember liking in your earlier years, but only tangentially resemble that thing in any way, shape, or form. I'm speaking of the Yar's Revenges of the world, the games that lean exclusively on the name of a thing you recognize, while being virtually unrecognizable as that thing.

BurgerTime: World Tour is probably not the BurgerTime you remember...

BurgerTime: World Tour is essentially in the same boat. Yes, it features giant hamburgers that must be assembled via repeated, unsanitary stompings, and it has a multitude of enemies you must dodge that range from enraged hot dogs to particularly pissed-off pickles. But beyond the core conceit, World Tour is virtually unrecognizable compared with the arcade classic that spawned it. Unfortunate as that is, the truth is that BurgerTime: World Tour actually isn't a half bad game on its own merits, particularly in multiplayer situations. Just don't go in expecting the BurgerTime you fell in love with lo those many decades ago, and you might even have some fun.

In order to update BurgerTime for the modern era, developer Monkeypaw Games made some fairly significant changes to the formula. Where the game once existed in a single, flat, pixelated plane, each stage in World Tour has been blown out into a 2D/3D hybrid that extends the playing field significantly. In addition, the radical and controversial concept of "jumping" has been added. This on its own may sound like blasphemy to those who enjoyed the original BurgerTime. The arcade game and its subsequent ports offered no such option to its heroic, playable chef. Dodging enemies was, instead, a game of intense, stressful ladder climbing that resembled the sort of evasive antics of the Pac-Man ilk. Now you can hop over enemies in addition to climbing around them, a concept that will no doubt boil the bile of every BurgerTime superfan out there.

As for the rest of you, probably not so much. As I said, World Tour is a fairly different beast from its original namesake. The gameplay is generally less stressful, and a bit faster-paced. Yes, you are still assembling comically oversized hamburgers that have been separated into various pieces across many different platforms, and you are still required to run across those various burger ingredients to drop them down a platform and eventually put them all together, but playing World Tour feels a lot more like a modern platformer, shrunk down into bite-sized levels, than anything remotely similar to the arcade original.

And again, that's fine. BurgerTime: World Tour's gameplay might not resemble its predecessor too terribly much, but it's decent enough at what it does. The single-player is a bit lacking, in that there are only a few worlds to plow through and you'll likely do so in a mere couple of hours. The tacked-on boss fights don't do much to vary things up, nor do the added power-ups. Gadgets like rocket boosters and invincibility-giving energy drinks don't do much to break up the core flow of burger assemblage, and apart from a few weapons like pepper shakers and bludgeoning spatulas, there isn't much combat to speak of in the game, meaning you'll be jumping and avoiding enemies more often. That's generally fine, though the lack of enemy variety and meager amount of level variation does make things wear thin a bit quicker than you might like.

...but as its own piece of multiplayer silliness, it ain't half bad!

Fortunately, BurgerTime fares a good bit better in multiplayer. Up to four players can jump into a match, all competing to create an ever-regenerating series of burgers within a specific time limit. While the enemies and level traps remain, where BurgerTime: World Tour's multiplayer stands out is in your ability to screw with your opponents. All the attacks you can launch against in-game enemies you can also toss at your opponents, allowing for a constant stream of antagonistic tomfoolery through each match. It's a good bit of fun that's only handicapped by the relatively small number of multiplayer maps, and the aforementioned lack of gameplay variety. It's the sort of thing you can totally play for an hour or so with some friends (as it works both offline and on), but it's unlikely you'll find yourself too terribly addicted to it.

If you can accept that BurgerTime: World Tour is something fairly different from the arcade classic you may remember, there's a good chance you'll find some enjoyment in it. Like your average fast food hamburger, it's insubstantial, but so is its $10 price point. It's a solid multiplayer snack, if not a proper meal.

Free iPad comic tells the story of Operation Ajax

I've been reading a lot of comics on the iPad lately, and while I love my iPad for a lot of reasons, I think reading comics is one of the best reasons to own an iPad. The big, beautiful screen brings comic art to life exquisitely, most apps allow you to zoom in and out of bigger pages at will, and the touch interface makes flipping a page as easy as, well, flipping a page. So I have no problem at all with free comics to download on the iPad, and that's exactly what Operation Ajax is.

It's a historical comic (so no superheroes, for those of you into that, unfortunately), about the CIA's operation to cause a coup d'état in Iran in 1953. The app features full sound and motion as you're reading through the pages, along with lots of background information about the real-life story and even some newsreel videos to check out.

And right now at launch, the app is completely free. Excellent deal, and a great way to get started in comics on the iPad if you haven't yet. After that, I highly recommend the Comixology app for buying digital comics directly, and I've been using the free ComicBookLover for reading my own .CBR digital files. I've been reading plenty of things in iBooks, too, but the iPad really seems made for reading some great comics.

Camera+ updated, VolumeSnap returns at last

In August of 2010, tap tap tap's Camera+ got pulled from the App Store because it implemented a feature which violated Apple's Developer Agreement at the time. VolumeSnap allowed Camera+ users to use the "+" volume button on the iPhone as a physical shutter switch for taking photos with the iPhone. After a four-month hiatus, Camera+ came back to the App Store with a redesigned and improved interface, but VolumeSnap was nowhere to be found.

Things certainly changed over the next few months; Apple "Sherlocked" the VolumeSnap feature for iOS 5's own Camera app. It worked exactly the same way as it did in Camera+, and I imagine tap tap tap must have been a bit peeved at Apple for a while.

Camera+ has now been updated with the VolumeSnap feature returned in all its glory, and as you can tell from the release notes, tap tap tap is pretty excited about it. The feature works just like Apple's, um, borrowed implementation: press the "+" volume button to take a picture while you're in the app and lining up a shot, and snap, there's your picture. You can still use the touchscreen shutter button instead if you prefer, and tap tap tap also has instructions for disabling VolumeSnap if you decide you dislike it (though I can't imagine why anyone would).

VolumeSnap makes an already great photography app even more useful. Though the whole saga hasn't exactly made Apple look like the good guy, at least it eventually came to its senses and allowed this great feature through.

Review: Jurassic Park Offers the Interactivity of a DVD Menu Screen

Though I'm far from a fan of 2010's Heavy Rain, I can at least admit one thing: The game did a damned good job of blanketing its flaws with sheer spectacle. While David Cage's blockbuster had a plot that read like a rejected CSI: Crime Scene Investigation spec script, the stark beauty of it all masked the fact that our actions had precious little consequence in such an on-rails world. Obviously, Telltale Games doesn't have access to the same resources as Cage, so when I heard designer Dave Grossman compare their take on Jurassic Park to Heavy Rain, I grew somewhat nervous; after all, how could such a relatively low-budget company possibly stay faithful to a franchise built on awe and wonder?

Simply put, they couldn't. And by throwing the player into the role of an omniscient and benevolent overseer rather than the shoes of actual characters, Telltale's Jurassic Park makes for one of the most passive gaming experiences to exist since Night Trap.

EasyFind is a free alternative to Spotlight

EasyFind is a free application that helps you find files and folders on your Mac. And yes, it's better than Spotlight.

EasyFind is made by the folks at DEVONtechnologies who are well-known for developing powerful search software DEVONthink, DEVONagent Pro, and DEVONagent Express, which is to say that EasyFind is made by people who know a lot about search. Compare that to Spotlight, which was a marquee feature of OS X six years ago but never grew into something great.

When you launch EasyFind, you will see several options and choices. Don't let years of Spotlight's simplistic UI overwhelm you; options and choices are a good thing. Take a minute to see what's available, and just start searching.

Down the left-hand side of the window are criteria for searching: Files and Folders, Only Files, Only Folders, or File Contents. Next choose to search for All Words, Any Word, a Phrase, or Unix-Wildcards. You can also specify whether or not the search should be case sensitive, whether it should look in package contents, or include invisible files and folders.

You can also set the scope of the search to be a specific volume/disk, or a specific folder such as your Home folder. 99% of my searches are for things I know are "somewhere" in my Home, or "somewhere" in my Dropbox. Spotlight only lets you choose "current folder" or "everything" which is almost never what I want.

That's far more control and options than what Spotlight gives you (or at least what Spotlight gives you without resorting to byzantine keywords), but what I really love is what you get in the results of your search. Of course you get the filename (and you can expand that column to make it wider, I just made it narrow in the screenshot above), but you also get the creation date, the modification date, the size, the kind and location. If you don't want any of those columns, you can turn them off. If you want to change the order of those columns, or if you want to sort your results by any of those columns, you can do that too.

EasyFind can search for the content of files, but it is not using Spotlight's database, it is actually running the search when you enter it. That means that it won't be as fast as Spotlight, but on my MacBook Air it is still very quick (the speed will be determined by the number of files you are searching plus the speed of the disk). I keep Spotlight around for those times when I need it, but in actual practice I rarely even do. In fact, I've reassigned my Spotlight Keyboard Shortcut to launch EasyFind instead.

(Aside: I had even disabled Spotlight for awhile on my Mac, but there are many things which just don't work properly if Spotlight is completely disabled, so I ended up turning it back on and just ignoring it. YMMV.)

You can download EasyFind from the Mac App Store or directly from DEVONtechnologies. If you download it directly, you can get a version which will work on Mac OS X 10.5 or higher (PowerPC or Intel), which is good news for folks running older versions of Mac OS X.

Pink Floyd, Sting release biography apps

Just coincidentally, I decided today to pull up some Sting on Spotify and listen to some old tracks. Turns out the musician released a big box set called Sting: 25 Years a few months ago, featuring three CDs worth of his songs, both old and remastered. And just recently, to go with that set, he's also released a companion iPad app, featuring concert footage, interviews, lyrics, handwritten notes from over the years, and lots of other biographical notes and info. You can even use AirPlay to send content to your TV while using the app, so that's pretty cool. Sting performed in New York to announce the app recently, and 9to5Mac says he performed "Fragile," dedicating the song to none other than Steve Jobs. The app looks pretty comprehensive, and thanks to some corporate sponsors, it's a free download, though a big one (442 MB).

Pink Floyd also has an app out -- this one's a universal build called "This Day in Pink Floyd," and as you might imagine, it offers up news, song notes, and trivia about the classic band, with new content delivered every day. There's also an exclusive music video, some special Pink Floyd wallpapers, and even a "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" ringtone. That app is $2.99.

Great to see some classic musicians like this really delivering some interesting content via the App Store. Neither app has any of the musicians' actual music in it for you to listen to (though they both allow you to play music directly from your own device's library), but as an ancillary reference, both of these are really solid.
